Vary. The length. Of your sentences.

This is one of those writing tips that is somehow never emphasized while we're learning the fine art of stringing sentences together. Whether you are writing an essay, an email, or even a restaurant review, the one thing you DON'T want is for your reader to start skimming through your work. Keeping the rhythm of your text interesting goes a long way towards maintaining an interest in the words that are still to come. As with almost every tip, this doesn't have to be applied to essays or creative writing alone:

Short, crisp sentences are great for emphasizing details. Longer sentences help weave a picture for your readers, and help them get carried away along your train of thought.
